China: Tang/Liao Dynasty [ 618-1125 ]
Length: 1 7/8in [ 4.8cm ]
A mottled green and grey celadon jade pendant modelled as a standing Hindustani merchant, the moustachioed figure wearing a turban and long flowing robe, his hands gripping a staff held before him.
Reference: Bluett & Sons Ltd.; Dr Newton¹s Zoo, no. 15, page 16. This tribute bearer has similarities to our own carving in that one can compare both of them with sculpture and Tang pottery figures with the hands held high to the chest, the flowing clothes, and the protruding shoes.

Arts Council of Great Britain and The Oriental Ceramic Society; Chinese Jade throughout the ages, London, 1975, no. 212, page 74.
