A translucent celadon and russet jade model of Zhong Kui, the demon queller, the bearded mythical figure standing in long flowing robes and wearing a tabbed cap, a sword in both hands, his right foot resting on the back of a crouching horned demon grasping the silk tassel suspended from the weapon, the details of the faces deeply defined and the folds of the robe well executed.

Provenance: Property of a Lady

Zhong Kui was a the hero of a Chinese legend of the Tang Dynasty. Originally a disqualified student by failure in the state examinations, he had committed suicide only to return to devote himself to the expulsion of all devils in the Empire.
