Catalogue No.9
China: Song to early Ming Dynasty,
10th to 15th Century
Height: 2.3/4in [ 7cm ]
A white jade model of a dancing bearded Central Asian figure wearing a cap, the long-sleeved robe belted at the waist and terminating in flared trousers, the right arm flung behind his head, the left brought across his chest, his right leg slightly raised, the underside of the feet with slight russet inclusions, the well polished stone of pure translucent white tone, the details well defined.

Provenance: Property of a Lady

Note: the above carving fits into the group of jade depictions of tribute bearers (see Knapton Rasti Catalogue, November 2004, no's 6, 7 and 14), most of which dated between 7th to the 12th Centuries. This figure of a dancer, in Central Asian style is similar to the subject matter on jade plaques arranged along a leather or cloth belts, which were often musicians and dancers.

Reference: for a similar stylistic treatment of a Tang Dynasty white jade standing figure see no.213, p.74, and no.216, p.75 Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, 1973-74 1974-75.
